News Release
In the months after Tropical Storm Helene, Biltmore has made a remarkable recovery. Biltmore House and the estate’s conservatory, restaurants, winery, gardens, and hotels all came through the storm with minimal or no damage. Looking ahead to spring, guests to the estate can anticipate vibrant blooms in historic gardens, with tulips and azaleas set to dazzle. Biltmore’s dedication to sustainability shines through in recovery efforts, including the innovative repurposing of storm-damaged oak trees. Biltmore has salvaged this wood from the estate to make approximately 850 oak barrels. These barrels will be air-dried and aged for future wine production at Biltmore Winery. In a continued commitment to environmental stewardship, Biltmore is planting 2,000 new trees this year, with plans to plant at least 1,000 trees annually over the next four years. With spring break just around the corner, Biltmore offers families a relaxed pace for enjoying experiences that combine history, nature, and fun. Whether it’s exploring the estate’s 22 miles of scenic hiking and biking trails among Blue Ridge Mountain flora and fauna, or taking an engaging audio tour of the 250-room Gilded Age mansion (featuring kid-friendly guides and translations in several languages), there’s something for every age. NEW this spring, families can dive into the fascinating world of ancient Egypt with Tutankhamun: His Tomb and His Treasures, a special exhibition showcasing the legacy of the “Boy King.” For hands-on experiences, meet friendly farm animals at the estate’s farmyard and visit the Outdoor Adventure Center for activities such as falconry, archery, sporting clays, horseback riding, and more.
Did you know that more species of plants can be found in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Biltmore than in any other area of similar size in North America? That biodiversity means spring is the perfect time to explore Biltmore’s stunning grounds and gardens, designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Known for iconic designs like Central Park and the U.S. Capitol grounds, Olmsted’s work at Biltmore was his final masterpiece and we’re proud to showcase it each spring. We’d love to help you plan a spring feature. If any ideas interest you, we’d be happy to connect you with a Biltmore expert.
According to AAA data, European cities are experiencing record demand as spring break destinations this year. However, there’s no need to travel across the globe when you can experience a world of culture and history – from European estates to the mystery of ancient Egypt – all in one unforgettable visit to Biltmore.
Begin such a journey at Biltmore House, where founder George Vanderbilt and architect Richard Morris Hunt drew inspiration from their travels through France and England. The design of Biltmore House reflects the grandeur of the châteaux of France’s Loire Valley, with elements inspired by Château de Blois, Château de Chenonceau, and Château de Chambord. Renowned international artists, including Austrian sculptor Karl Bitter and Spanish architect Raphael Guastavino, traveled to Asheville to contribute to Biltmore’s extraordinary construction. Inside Biltmore House, discover treasures from European adventures like the Library ceiling painting by Giovanni Pellegrini and a grand Italian wedding chest (cassone).
The global exploration at Biltmore doesn’t end with Europe. Opening March 21, Biltmore is hosting a special exhibition, Tutankhamun: His Tomb and His Treasures, offering a rare opportunity to experience the wonders of ancient Egypt. Guests will be invited to step inside one of the world’s greatest historic events: the 1922 discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. A YouTube preview of this special exhibition is available for embedding in articles.
Biltmore’s Tutankhamun: His Tomb and His Treasures exhibition offers guests a chance to step inside the wonders of ancient Egypt at a time when the past continues to captivate us with new revelations. With recent news out of Egypt — archaeologists have made a groundbreaking discovery of the first royal tomb found in Egypt since King Tut’s was found over a century ago — it’s a timely moment. Biltmore’s exhibit provides a unique opportunity to explore the history of Egypt and the legacy of the “Boy King,” just as new discoveries make global headlines.
