Fall Color Report

As of October 22

Peak color has arrived at Biltmore! Cool nights and sunny days this week created optimal weather conditions to bring out all the glorious hues of autumn. The mountainsides are bursting with fall color. Biltmore’s Director of Horticulture Parker Andes reports “the hickories are bright yellow to gold. The understory sourwoods have turned from burgundy to a rosy pink while the sourwoods in full sun are still deep red. The oaks are a nice dark red this year in the open pasture areas.”

In the Gardens, woodland shrubs like Spice Bush and Sweet Shrub are bright yellow, Japanese Maples, Summersweet and Sweetspire shrubs have taken on the best color with a mix of red and orange. The Viburnums are dark red with bright red berries. Fall mums, ornamental grasses, and Beautyberry provide a nice fall backdrop for walks.
